Often Confused Linkers Part II

Hello flocks, welcome back!!!

Linkers - Part II

Linkers are the words which relate one idea or sentence to the text with another. It can also be described as transitions or discourse markers. In addition to the linkers of cause-and-effect, addition and sum up, it also functions to compare, contrast, illustrate and define the thoughts of the writer. When a writer is able to perfectly choose the linkers to his or her writing, their text will be the most admired text with highly logical and coherent paragraphs. Now let us have a look at the often-confused linkers.

AND, BUT, THEN

AND

It is a linker which helps to sum one concept, idea, phrase or sentence to another.

Example

  • I love to read, write and dance.
  • She prepared spaghetti, pasta and macaroni for lunch.
  • He went to the park, and it was raining.
  • Ravi spent more money and lived happily.

A+B+C = Read+ Write + dance (ref Eg.1)

        BUT

It is a linker of contrast that helps to reveal the exceptions or the contradictory concepts, ideas, phrases or sentence

           Example

  • Sunil likes all kinds of flowers but rose.
  • He treats everyone equal, but he is ill tempered.
  • I like to have tea but not coffee.
  • Sushi plays guitar but she loves keyboard.

EXCEPTION (Ref Eg.1)

THEN

It is a linker of sequence to join a piece of a process. It exclaims the cause effect relation and also refers to the time of action.

Example

  • I met him when I studied. I was very young then.
  • To prepare a coffee, first boil the milk, then add coffee powder to it with the required amount of sugar.

  • Readers are leaders. I am a reader. Then, I am a leader too.

  • If you are offended by his actions, then stay away from the problem.

REFER EXAMPLE 3 AND 4

Hope you have understood the difference and usages of And, But and Then

Stay tuned!!! Till I meet you in yet another fabulous and interesting blog.
