                                                                 ENGLISH PHRASAL VERBS -2


Set aside

Meaning:

-to keep a portion of something for use in the future

- to move something to one side until you need it

- to save or keep money or time for a particular purpose


For Example:

1.   She tries to set aside some money every month.

2.   After you have picked the tomatoes, set aside any that are damaged and I will use them to make jam.

3.   Let’s set aside my personal feelings for now.

4.   He asked them to set aside minor differences for the sake of peace.

5.   I set aside half an hour every evening to do exercise. 


 Speak up

           Meaning:

-         To talk louder

-         To express your opinion

-         Speak up for somebody to speak in support of someone

          

       

  For Example:

1.   Speak up. I cannot hear you.

2.   If anyone has a better idea, please speak up.

3.   If you disagree, please speak up.

4.   He is willing to speak up for the rights of men.

5.   Hey Vicki. I can’t hear you. There’s too much noise. Can you speak up?


Hang out with

         Meaning:

-                  to spend time with somebody

-                  to spend a lot of time with someone

       

           For Example:

1.   After school, the older kids go to the mall and hang out with their friends.

2.   I will swim, go for walks, or hang out with my friends.

3.   I don’t usually hang with men who wear earrings.

4.   He always hangs out with his teacher in college.

5.   I often used to hang out with my mother at the supermarket.

 

Keep in

          Meaning:

-         to make someone stay in a place like a school or a hospital

-         not allow someone out

          

                                                             

            For Example:

    1.   I always kept in during job hours.  

    2.   I went to the hospital because, I was not feeling well, and they kept me in overnight for observation.

    3.   They were kept in after school.

    4.   You should not keep your anger in all the time.

    5.   If he takes her to the hospital, they might keep her in

    6.   The owner kept the fish in the fish tank.
