EVERYDAY ENGLISH - Linkers Part - 1

Life is like an elegant spin of a top that whirls between birth and death. Top is just a piece of wood unless it is linked to a thread. The thread that aids spinning makes it a vibrant toy. As how LinkedIn connects the network of professionals to common people, the linkers in English constructs the communication of common people to imitate professionals. Linkers connect the words or phrases to bring ideas together, it establishes the logical connection within the text. It can link two or more sentences together. Linkers are highly helpful in analyzing a text or an argument with high clarity.

     For instance, have a look at the following sentences…

1) We should plant more trees. Oxygen is the elixir of life.

2) We should plant more trees because oxygen is the elixir of life.

Here, because is the linker.

The sentence with a linker possesses a more complete sense when compared to that of a prior one. Majorly linkers can be divided into three categories based on its usage. They are as follows

1.      Cause and effect linkers

Example:

v  Due to the heavy sun, I couldn't stand in the assembly.

v  It’s dangerous for him to take this ride so try to convince him.

v  I can’t help you until you reveal the truth.

2.     Addition linkers

Example:

v  I am hungry but I don’t have anything to eat.

v  She eats apples as well as oranges.

v  The food tastes good, and I ate the food.

3.     Sum up linkers

Example:

v  All in all, I love this life.

v  She got first rank as a result of her hard work.

v  She wants to find the secret thus she arrived today.
