English Language- Spelling and Pronunciation: Silent Letters (Part-III)

Dear readers, so far, we have learnt that there is no relationship between spelling and pronunciation in English. It is this complex nature of spelling and pronunciation often confuses the non-native speakers of English frequently. In the previous post we learnt the silent letter words, namely, G, H, I, K, L in English. Having understood this fact, let us have a look at some silent letters, namely, N, P, S, T, U, W and their pronunciations in English. The letters highlighted in the following are not pronounced while speaking, but in writing there is no such exemption.

1.     Words with silent letter “N”

-        Autumn           as         (Awtm)

-        Column           as        (Colum)

-        Hymn              as        (Him)

-        Condemn        as         (Condem)

2.     Words with silent letter “P”

-        Receipt            as         (Riseet)

-        Cupboard        as        (Cuboad)

-        Psychology     as       (Sychology)

-        Psychiatrist     as      (Sychayatrist)

-        Pseudo            as         (Seudo)

-        Pneumonia      as       (Neumonia)

3.     Words with silent letter “S”

-        Island              as        (Ailand)

-        Aisle               as         (Ail)

4.     Words with silent letter “T”

-        Listen              as        (Lisen)

-        Often               as         (Ofen)

-        Castle              as         (Caasl) or (Casl)

-        Whistle           as        (Wisl)

-        Watch             as        (Wach)

-        Wrestle           as         (Resel)

5.     Words with silent letter “U”

-        Building          as        (Bilding)

-        Biscuit            as         (Biskit)

-        Guest               as         (Gest)

-        Guilt                as         (Gilt)

-        Guitar              as         (Gitar)

-        Tongue            as         (Tong)

6.     Words with silent letter “W”

-           Answer            as                     (Anser)

-           Wrong             as                      (Rong)

-           Wrist               as                      (Rist)

-           Sword              as                     (Soad)

-           Two                 as                       (To)
