 SENTENCE STRUCTURE

(Part III)

 Simple Sentence

A simple sentence has one subject and one predicate.

Example:

We went to a party yesterday.

Compound Sentence

        A compound sentence has more than one part that can stand alone (independent clauses).

        Independent clauses are connected by coordinating conjunctions, conjunctive adverbs, or a semi-colon.

 Example:

  1. We went to a party and most of us danced all night.
  2. My parents caught a severe cold; consequently, they had to cancel their vacation.
  3. Some people like basketball; others prefer baseball.

Complex Sentence

        A complex sentence has at least two parts: One that can stand alone and another one that

cannot.

        The part that stand alone is linked to the rest of the sentence by a subordinating conjunction.

Example:

Since my friends and I wanted to have fun, we went to a party yesterday.

Compound-Complex Sentence

        Compound-Complex Sentence is made up of more than one sentence joined by conjunction, and at least one of those sentences is Complex. In other words, it is a compound sentence with a dependent, or subordinate clause.

Example:

         1. Ram cried when his dog got sick, but he soon got better.

         2. After the corona, college started, and I was excited to see my friends.

         3. I will get to watch television, but first, I have to clean up the dishes after we finish eating.
