Simple
Sentence
A simple sentence
has one subject and one predicate.
Example:
We went to a party
yesterday.
Compound
Sentence
•
A
compound sentence has more than one part that can stand alone (independent
clauses).
•
Independent
clauses are connected by coordinating conjunctions, conjunctive adverbs, or a
semi-colon.
Example:
- We went to a party and most of us danced all
night.
- My parents caught a severe cold; consequently,
they had to cancel their vacation.
- Some people like basketball; others prefer
baseball.
Complex Sentence
• A complex sentence has at least two parts: One that can stand alone and another one that
cannot.
• The part that stand alone is linked to the rest of the sentence by a subordinating conjunction.
Example:
Since my friends and I wanted to have fun, we went to a party yesterday.
Compound-Complex Sentence
•
Compound-Complex Sentence is made up of more than one sentence joined by conjunction,
and at least one of those sentences is Complex. In other words, it is a
compound sentence with a dependent, or subordinate clause.
Example:
• 1. Ram cried when his dog got sick, but he soon got better.
•
2. After the corona, college
started, and I was excited to see my friends.
•
3. I will get to watch television, but first,
I have to clean up the dishes after we finish eating.
