PARTS OF SPEECH (PART X)

                     PARTS OF SPEECH

                              (PART X)

Conjunction:

What is a Conjunction?

Conjunction is a word that joins (connects) words or sentences.

How they connect words?

Examples:

i)                Hari and Ram are friends. (Here, ‘and’ is a connector between two words Hari and Ram.)

ii)             Two and two makes four.

How conjunction joins sentences?

Examples:

Ø Ajay is a good batsman. Virat is a good batsman.

(Here, there are two separate sentences. Both the sentences are giving information about two batsman and their quality. The sentences can be joined by conjunctions.)

Ø Ajay and Virat are good batsmen.

(Two sentences are converted into one without affecting the meaning.)

Ø The man is poor. The man is honest.

Ø The man is poor but honest.

There are seven conjunctions.

Examples:

I drank some water, for I was thirsty.

He was tired and hungry.

I can’t whistle nor can I sing.

They studied hard but couldn’t clear the exam.

Do you want tea or coffee?

I ran fast yet I came last.

I was hungry so I ate the food.
