English capitalization rules: When to capitalize (Continuation)

English capitalization rules: When to capitalize (Continuation)

When to capitalize seasons

Are seasons capitalized? In general, the seasons—spring, summer, autumn (fall), and winter—are not capitalized. They use lowercase just like other common nouns.

Last winter and spring were so bad, this summer has to be better.

However, often seasons are used in titles, especially in fashion. In this case, they are part of a proper noun, and so they are capitalized.

Hermès’s Fall 2022 collection was even better than Prada’s Spring 2021 collection.

When to capitalize job titles

Just like the seasons, job titles, positions, or honorifics are sometimes capitalized and sometimes lowercased. When these titles are used as part of a proper name, they are capitalized; when they refer to the general job or position, they are lowercased.

The next president may be from a different region than President Mujica.

Likewise, honorifics like Mr. and Ms. are capitalized when used before a name.

"SAVING THE EARTH" - Reading Activity

Tips: Read the conversation carefully and review the key vocabulary and the sentences

Interviewer: Today, I am interviewing my student Mohan about his feelings on how people can help save the environment.

So, Mohan, how can we save the environment?

Mohan: By saving water.

Interviewer: well, how can we do that?

Mohan: By not using too much water when we wash dishes, take a bath, and when we do other things, like watering the plants outside.

Interviewer: Oh, I think I can do that. What else?

Mohan: When drinking or eating something outside, you should keep the garbage until you find a trash can to put it in because littering makes our planet dirty. Do you like seeing trash all over the ground?

Interviewer: No, I don’t. Do you have any final suggestions?

Mohan: Yes. We shouldn’t waste paper because trees are being cut down to make the paper. By recycling paper, we save the forest where animals live.

Interviewer: So, how can children recycle paper, I mean, every day?

Mohan: Well, for example, when I was in Kindergarten, I used to save the newspapers so that I could make things out of them, like paper trees, instead of just throwing them away.  Now, the children in our neighbourhood collect newspapers once a month to take them to a recycling centre.

Interviewer: That’s great. Well, thank you Mohan for your valuable ideas.

Vocabulary: Litter, suggestions, Kindergarten

Litter: throw garbage on the ground

Suggestions: ideas about what someone should do

Kindergarten: it is a preschool educational approach based on playing, singing, drawing etc.

After a colon

Capitalization after a colon depends on what the colon is used for. If a colon is used to introduce a list, do not use capitalization.

Here’s what we need at the grocery store: blueberries, strawberries, and whipped cream.

If the colon is used to introduce an independent clause, capitalization is optional. However, different style guides have different preferences, so double-check with whatever format you’re using.

There are plenty of reasons to plant a garden: First and foremost, it’s a lot of fun.
