Language Tip: Use Modal Verbs to Express Politeness

Modal verbs like can, could, may, might, should, would, and must are powerful tools in English to express requests, suggestions, permission, or obligations politely and clearly.

For example:

Can you share the document with me? (simple request)
Could you open the window, please? (polite request)
May I borrow your book for a day? (formal permission)
Might we reschedule the meeting? (tentative suggestion)
You should submit the report by Monday. (advice)
You must wear an ID card inside the campus. (obligation)
Would you like to join us for lunch? (invitation)
Shall we start the discussion now? (formal suggestion)

Using the right modal verb instantly improves your tone and ensures your message is received positively. Using modals shows respect and helps avoid sounding too direct or rude—especially important in academic and professional settings. Practicing with modals improves your tone, builds better relationships, and makes your communication more effective and courteous.
