What is a
sentence?
A sentence is a
set of words that is complete in itself, typically containing a subject and
predicate, conveying a statement, question, exclamation, or command, and
consisting of a main clause and sometimes one or more subordinate clauses.
Examples:
1. She
opened the window.
2.
Come
in, please.
3.
Do
you like tea?
Types of
sentences:
There are four
main types of sentences:

Declarative
sentence
·
Imperative
sentence
·
Exclamatory
sentence
·
Interrogative
sentence
Declarative
sentence:
Declarative
sentences make a statement to relay information or ideas. They are punctuated
with a simple period. Formal essays or reports are composed almost entirely of
declarative sentences.
Examples:
1.
Declarative
sentences make a statement.
2.
The
concert begins in two hours.
3.
You
are a good man.
Imperative
sentences:
Imperative
sentences issue commands or requests or they can express a desire or wish. They
are punctuated with a simple period or they can be exclamations requiring an
exclamation mark. It all depends on the strength of emotion you want to
express. Exclamatory sentences can consist of a single verb or they can be lengthier
and more complex.
Examples:

Halt!
2.
Yield.
3.
Respond
immediately.
