PARTS OF SPEECH

(PART II)

Verbs and its types:

i)              Verbs are the main part of the sentence.

ii)           It tells us about the action performed by the subject and the situation of the subject.

iii)         Verbs are mainly divided into two types. They are Main verbs and Auxiliary verbs. Auxiliary verbs are also called as helping verbs.

Main verbs:

i)              Main Verbs show the action of the subject.

ii)           They stand alone and give meaning to sentence without depending on the other verbs.

iii)         Example: Run, sleep, eat, etc.

Auxiliary verbs:

i)              Auxiliary verbs give meaning to the main verbs.

ii)           They cannot stand alone as they depend on the main verb to give meaning.

iii)         Example: is, was, has, etc.

The highlighted syllables take primary stress in every word mentioned above. In other words, the highlighted words should be pronounced with more prominence than other syllables in the words displayed. Hence, we should pronounce those given words by giving more stress on the selected syllables. If we practise the stress patterns while speaking English, doubtlessly our English pronunciation will sound intelligible.

I’m wrecked.

Examples

1.    Raju is wrecked, he has been working hard every day for the last couple of days.

2.    Arjun is wrecked by restless work.

I’m whacked.

Examples

1.    I was wholly whacked after a long day I had.

2.    He seems to be whacked.

I’m pooped.

Examples

1.    I was completely pooped when I got home in the evening.

I’m wiped out.

TIME EXPRESSIONS

TIME EXPRESSIONS



1.    A WHILE BACK

Meaning: at some time in the past.

The dentist fixed my bad tooth a while back and now it’s fallen off.

2.    EVERY NOW AND THEN

Meaning: Occasionally.

Sarath is seeing his friend for coffee and chat every now and then.

3.    ABOUT TIME

Meaning: When you think that something should have happened earlier.

It’s about time you tidied up your room.

4.    AHEAD OF TIME

Meaning: In advance.

Malini will prepare food for the party ahead of time and keep it in the oven.

5.    IN NO TIME

Meaning: Very quickly.

As soon as we get out of the traffic jam, we’ll be home in no time.

6.    EVERY SO OFTEN

Meaning: Sometimes

Kavimani used to visit her grandparents every so often while they were still alive.

Example:

Carry on

Meaning:

-         Continue

Example:

-         He moved to Mumbai to carry on his work.

Close down

          Meaning:

-         Stop operating

Example:

-         The company has decided to close down its Chennai branch.

Note down

          Meaning:

-         Write something down

Example:

Step down
