(PART IX)

Adverb:

Adverb is a word that modifies (adds or change) a verb, adjective or adverbs in any sentence.

There are four ways in which adverb modifies or describes the action.

i)              How an action is performed?

ii)           Where an action is performed?

iii)         When an action is performed?

iv)         How often an action is performed?

 

i)              How an action is performed?

These are called adverb of manner.

Examples:

a)   The alarm rang loudly. (Here, loudly is describing the manner in which the alarm rang.)

b)  Hary ran quickly.

 

ii)           Where is an action is performed?

These are called adverb of place.

Examples:

a)   Put the cake there.

b)  I looked everywhere for my book.

 

iii)         When an action is performed?

These are called adverb of time.

Examples:

a)   Kriti went to gym today.

b)  They go out to dinner weekly.

 

iv)         How often an action is performed?

These are called adverb of frequency.

Examples:

a)   Sometimes he plays cricket.

b)  Surya never smokes.

Adverb that describes adjective:

Examples:

a) He is very happy today. (Here, ‘Happy’ is the adjective and the word ‘very’ describes the intensity of happiness)

b)  Siya wore brightly coloured dress in the party.

Adverbs that describe other adverbs in the sentence:

Examples:

a)   The dancer moves so gracefully. (Here, How the dancer moves is described by the adverb ‘gracefully’ and the word ‘so’ describes the intensity of that adverb.)

b)  The scientist quite easily solved the problem.
