(PART III)
Verbs and its types:
i) Verbs are the main part of the sentence.
ii) It tells us about the action performed by the subject and the situation of the subject.
(In Part II, an explanation and example for main verbs
and auxiliary verbs were given, in this part, let's look into transitive and
intransitive verbs)
What is a transitive verb?
A transitive verb is an action that has a direct object to receive that action. So, it’s an action verb with a direct object.
Example: The man loves his children.
(Explanation: Here, Man is the subject; Love is the action performed by the man; Children is the receiver (direct object).
Some more examples,
i) The doctor cured him.
ii) She crossed the street.
iii) Rohan kicked the ball.
What is an intransitive verb?
An intransitive verb is an action that does not have a direct object to receive that action. So, it’s an action verb without a direct object.
Example: Snow fell yesterday
(Explanation: Here, Snow is the subject; fell is the action but we cannot say, the snow fell on whom. In other words, no direct object to receive the action.)
Some more examples,
i) We failed.
ii) She is sleeping.
iii) They work hard.
Note: To identify any object, we use “What” or “Whom” question.
