COMMON ERRORS IN EVERYDAY LIFE: TRAVEL AND PLACES
Dear
readers, in the previous post, we discussed the common errors in terms of “Talking
about Work and Learning” that we commit in our daily conversations. In this
post, let us explore more about communicative errors in terms of “Travel and
Places”. Some of the important errors that tend to occur naturally in our
conversation are briefed below:
Look
at the following statements:
1. I am coming from Madurai.
I
come from Madurai or I am from Madurai.
Use Simple Present Tense while
talking about our native place or country.
2. I go to college with my motorbike.
I
go to college on my motorbike.
Use ‘on’ to mention about motorbike.
3. Teacher arrived late in school.
Teacher
arrived late at school.
“Arrive in” should be used in a town or a country but ‘at’
is used in other places like office, school, theatre etc.
4.
I go to office by foot.
I
go to office on foot.
We go by car, bus, train, plane etc. but
we must use ‘on’ before foot.
5.
The climate in Coimbatore is quite
sultry this month.
The weather in Coimbatore is quite sultry this month.
‘Climate’ is used to refer to typical weather conditions over large regions, that is tropical climate. For local conditions ‘weather’ should be used.
