PARTS OF SPEECH
(PART XII)
Interjection:
Interjection is a word that shows spontaneous feeling or emotion of a person.
Examples:
Let’s suppose, there is a boy who has never seen the Taj Mahal. When he finally sees it, what would be his reaction? – Wow! What a beautiful place.
If the same person goes to the island and sees it to be dirty, then what would be his reaction? – Eww! What a dirty place.
Wow! and Eww! are expressing the spontaneous feeling of a person and are called interjections.
Hurray! I won the race.
Argh! That car doesn’t work.
Aaw! That puppy is so cute.
Oops! I left the key in the parking.
Yipee! I bought a new house.
Important points related to interjections:
Interjections are not grammatically connected to the rest of the sentence.
Examples:
Yuck! That taste awful.
(Here, Yuck! is the expression while eating bad food but Yuck! is not connected to any other part of the sentence. So, even if the word Yuck! is removed, the sentence will be grammatically correct. Interjection just fills the sentence to make it more expressive.)
Interjections end with exclamatory mark or comma.
More interjection examples:
Cheers! (used while partying)
Well, Duh! (used when knowing that you are so dump about the thing or situation)
Eek! (used to express surprise or fear)
